For me, as an artist I see things very viscerally and feel things. I believe art is always trying to communicate a feeling, getting that across. And I think if I'm successful with that, that's why people buy my stuff. My name is Stephen Holland. I'm a painter. I do a lot of painting of professional athletes. Some of other celebrities, too. One of the big feelings I try to get overall in my paintings is almost like a real raspy, blues singer. You know, an old time blues singer, singing. They had a sense of raw sensuality I try to get in my work. I enjoy paintings sports energy for several reasons. I love the action. I love the action so much I don't even think about it. When I look at a picture, it's not like I'm appreciating that consciously. But it seems that most of my stuff, people are always telling me how they love the action in it. So I had to realize that there was something in me that was relating to that. What I do like is the composition. There's a real-- with muscles, with clothes, I can really play around with form and color in a way that I like. Also, I like painting tough guys. I just enjoy-- I don't like to hurt anybody. I don't like to see anybody get hurt. I barely will kill a fly if I can get it out of the house. And yet, I just love the ruggedness of it, that kind of look, that kind of-- I just feel it. I've met Magic several times. He's an extremely charismatic person, not to mention a completely charismatic player. I think one of the things that always got me about Magic-- to do any portraits I've ever done of Magic-- I had to make sure that he looked-- that there was a quality of him being like a cute little kid showing in that. I love the colors. I love the iridescence of Magic's skin. I mentioned to you before about loving to paint like an old blues, raspy singer, that rawness and stuff. And I think I was able to put a lot of that into this. And I like the way the background fits, that he's like a-- the figure stands out like a jewel against the background. [MUSIC PLAYING]
