There's been a lot of buzz surrounding niacin. So as a cardiologist with nearly 30 years of clinical experience, I believe it is extremely important for people to know the difference among the various dietary supplement niacins, which are available without a prescription, especially if people are using these to help maintain good cholesterol or high density lipoprotein or HDL cholesterol within the normal range. HDL is often referred to as good cholesterol because it is thought to help move cholesterol out of the arteries to the liver where the body can get rid of it. A normal level of HDL cholesterol in the blood is higher than 40 milligrams per deciliter. I've often stressed to patients that only dietary supplement niacin in the form of nicotinic acid such as Slo-Niacin has been clinically proven to support good cholesterol. Flush-free niacin may not cause flushing, but this dietary supplement niacin does not contain nicotinic acids, and has not been shown to have any significant effect on good cholesterol. Sometimes the term niacin is used to refer to not only nicotinic acid, but also the closely related molecules such as inositol hexaniacinate, inositol hexanicotinate, or nicotinamide. Now these all may be a mouthful, and it can get confusing. But it's important to read the label and look for nicotinic acid. I have had excellent success managing the heart health of my patients with Slo-Niacin, which utilizes a unique polygel control release system that gradually delivers nicotinic acids to the body, and is specifically designed to reduce the likelihood of flushing.
