[MUSIC PLAYING] The Costco culture inspires us to take care of our people, to help encourage each other as employees, and to quite simply help all employees grow and be successful in their careers at Costco. Costco is also committed to a diverse workforce and an atmosphere of inclusion. It is not only the right thing to do, it is good for our business. We started Journeys in 2007 to specifically address the issues facing women in the workforce. While we had a diverse employee base, we noticed that we lost some of that diversity at higher levels of management. We wanted to understand, what, if any, obstacles were preventing women from moving into management positions. We wanted to provide educational, mentoring, and networking opportunities for women to help fill the pipeline with qualified women to be considered for management opportunities. It's a business imperative, extremely important in any organization that would be diverse. It makes good business sense to have more women in the management roles. That makes us better, is embracing those differences. I'm really a convert. Now, it's an essential part of our life. Journeys is just a great opportunity for me to identify people who have that certain something that we need to grow. Since its inception, I've had the pleasure of watching Journeys become an organization that brings women together to learn, build confidence, develop relationships and connections, mentor and support each other. We now have nearly 7,000 women, as well as 2,500 men, who have joined as advocates to indicate their support. While designed to help women succeed at Costco, Journeys' programs benefit all employees. The events have been, without question, tremendous, I think. The discussions that have occurred, the topics that they've covered. So you guys have to be the ones getting out there and championing everyone's efforts. And getting that culture and that message out. We must feel empowered to take care of the member. This is a perfect time of year for us to figure out, all right, what do we need to do to grow? How do we show up as a leader? Better for the environment, and how they are extracted, how they are sourced, how they're harvested. The symposiums are like the culmination of the year of Journeys, the time when you get to meet people from all over the company. There's men, there's VPs, EVPs. Everybody sits together. Everybody just kind of chats. It's a tremendous networking experience throughout the organization and has gone international. Journeys' members express that they were very inspired by being together. They loved the connections. They've built friendships. It's a built-in network right away. And we get to talk with leadership and have those face time moments and work on ideas with other people who we might not necessarily work with in our day-to-day job. You're surrounded by people that have succeeded in the jobs that they're at. And to be able to share stories. I've made connections with leaders in Canada, on the East Coast. I have, in particular, seen two or three ladies getting involved in Journeys, coming to some of the meetings, networking. And in fact, two of those people have both been promoted, which is fantastic. I can just sort of sit there and go, yes, they did this because of their participation. Being involved with Journeys is about growing and learning and helping others flourish. I've had a couple of assistants who have moved forward in their careers. So thanks to Journeys, I've really grown in my confidence. I went into the interview. I applied for the advertising project coordinator position. And I ended up getting it, getting the promotion. Hillary came to some of the mentoring sessions. And she had stayed home with her children. And then when she was getting back into the workforce, she blossomed throughout the sessions. You could just see. She wanted to thank Journeys for all that we had done for her. She had gone to a salaried, full-time position. That alone, keeps me motivated. That if Journeys can do that for one person, we can do it for everyone. We can help the women at Costco get to where they want to be. [MUSIC PLAYING] We believe Journeys is helping our company to continue to increase our levels of diversity, which better reflects our employee, member, and supplier communities. And ultimately, will make Costco and even stronger company.
